About ESTA

What is the ESTA?

Important: ESTA is required for all Visa Waiver Program (VWP) country citizens travelling to the US by air or sea.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a mandatory pre-travel authorization for citizens of countries participating in the US Visa Waiver Program. It allows eligible travellers to visit the United States for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit — without needing a visa.

Once approved, your ESTA is linked electronically to your passport and is valid for two years or until your passport expires (whichever comes first), allowing multiple entries to the US during that period.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is an ESTA valid? +
An approved ESTA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During that period you can make multiple trips to the US without reapplying, as long as each stay does not exceed 90 days.
How long does ESTA processing take? +
Most ESTA applications are approved within 24–72 hours. In many cases approval is granted within minutes. However, some applications are placed under further review which can take up to 72 hours. We recommend applying at least 72 hours before your flight.
What is the difference between an ESTA and a US visa? +
An ESTA is an electronic travel authorisation for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries — it allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit without requiring a full visa interview. A US visa is required for citizens of non-VWP countries, or for those wishing to stay longer, work, or study in the US.
Can I work or study in the US with an ESTA? +
No. An ESTA only permits travel for tourism, business meetings, or transit. You cannot take up paid employment or enrol in a formal degree programme. Short recreational or vocational courses may be permitted. If you plan to work or study, you must apply for the appropriate US visa.
What happens if my ESTA is denied? +
If your ESTA application is denied, you will need to apply for a US visa at a US embassy or consulate. A denial does not prevent you from applying for a visa. If you purchased our Buyer Protection add-on, you will receive a full refund of our service fee.
Do children need their own ESTA? +
Yes. Every traveller — including infants and children — who requires an ESTA must have their own individual authorisation. A parent or guardian may complete the application on the child's behalf.
Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days? +
No. The 90-day limit for ESTA travellers cannot be extended once you are in the US. If you need to stay longer you must depart and re-enter (subject to the admission officer's discretion) or apply for a change of status before your authorised stay expires.
Is ESTA the same as a US visa? +
No. ESTA is not a visa — it is a travel authorisation that allows eligible citizens to travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program. It does not guarantee entry; a US Customs and Border Protection officer still determines admissibility on arrival.
